Marlys Chapman Pursues Advanced Education

Maryls Chapman

Marlys Chapman, a Dietetic Technician Registered, is pursuing advanced education in Nutrition from Eastern Michigan University.  Marlys has been employed with Golden Valley Memorial Hospital since 1991.

As a senior dietetics student Marlys has been awarded the Farnsworth Dietetics Scholarship.  Marlys was nominated by one of her professors for this scholarship.  The Farnsworth Scholarship is the result of a special gift given this year by Ethel and Kenneth Farnsworth.

The Farnsworths and now their family provide the leadership of Rhodes Bake N Serv Frozen Bread Dough Company.  In recent years the Farnsworths have been instrumental in teaching people how to bake bread and other nutritious items using sun-powered ovens.  Sun oven cooking has valuable applications for emergencies, conservation and especially for people in third world environments.

The Farnsworths have chosen to help Eastern Michigan Dietetic Students complete their education so these students can make useful contributions to society.

Students that are selected for the Eastern Michigan’s Master of Nutrition program complete two years of advanced coursework along with clinical rotations.  A third year is required to complete research and write a thesis.

As a senior Marlys has already completed courses in Advanced Nutrition Therapy and Foods Systems Management and 832 hours of Clinical Rotations.  Rotations included acute care, long-term care, out-patient education and food-service management.

This year Marlys will continue with classes and complete 896 Clinical hours.  She will be focusing on public health, private practice, food-service management and critical care.  Senior students, also, explore research topics in preparation for their third year.  With completion of coursework Marlys will be eligible to sit for the credentialing exam for Registered Dietitian.
