GVMH Announces the Winners of the Zeta Gilvin Scholarship

Zeta Gilvin Scholarship Winners

Left to Right: Randy S. Wertz, CEO of GVMH, Lynn Ivie of Hawthorne Bank, Chuck Gilvin, Callie Porter, Jennifer Cummings (Accepting for son, Andy Cummings), and Mark Mattes, Assistant Administrator/Patient Care Services.

Twelve area students interested in health care careers recently applied for the Zeta Gilvin Scholarship. The winners were announced at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital’s 14th Annual Nurses Week Tea held on May 7th.

The 2008 winners are Andy Cummings of Clinton and Callie Porter of Warsaw.
Andrew Cummings lives in Clinton and works as a CNA at GVMH. He graduated from Clinton High School in 2007 and had numerous achievements-some of which include Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Boys State Delegate, and Student Council to name a few. He has met all the qualifications for his BSN program at University of Central Missouri. Andrew was accepted in August 2007 to UCM and will begin the nursing program his third year of college. His goal is to become a registered nurse and "to provide excellent, high quality patient care which allows my patients and coworkers to have ultimate trust and complete confidence in my abilities."

Callie Porter, the daughter of Steve and Ann Porter, is from Warsaw and graduated from high school last year with a GPA of 3.9. She is completing her second semester of prerequisites at Southwest Baptist University and has been accepted to St. John's College of Nursing. She recently went to Kenya, Africa, for a mission trip with a team from Southwest Baptist University. Travel is not new to Callie; in her junior year of high school she went to England and France with the Humanities Club. Upon graduation, she hopes to incorporate her education in a way to continue being active in her church, her community and working with children.

The Zeta Gilvin Scholarship is made available by the generous donations of the family of Zeta Gilvin, her many friends, and from fund raising activities conducted by the Nursing Department at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital. Zeta Gilvin was a Registered Nurse at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital for 19 years and was a surgical nurse at the time of her untimely death.

The Zeta Gilvin Scholarship is available to anyone planning to, or now pursuing, a course of studies in a college or university (two-year, four-year, or graduate) in a health care related field, and who lives within a 25-mile radius of Golden Valley Memorial Hospital.  Application forms are made available once a year by contacting the Nursing Administration office at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, 1600 N. Second Street, Clinton, Missouri; (660) 885-5511 extension 7166.

Winner(s) of the scholarship are announced each year during National Nurses Week in May, and personal contributions to the Zeta Gilvin Scholarship Fund can be made at Citizens Union State Bank in Clinton.
