Walkers, healthcare suppliers, sponsors and Sluggerrr from the KC Royals joined together recently to make the 2011 Walk for Diabetes a terrific event at Clinton High School. Approximately $18,000 was raised.

The GVMH Foundation and the Diabetes Services Department join together each year to organize the event. The purpose is to raise funds to help area diabetes patients who need medicine or supplies, and to provide diabetes education in the area. Last year, more than 200 people received assistance from this designated GVMH Foundation fund.

Twenty-seven teams and nearly 400 individuals turned out to walk, have breakfast, and learn about diabetes. The theme was “Step Up to the Plate – Strike Out Diabetes.” Many teams had fun with baseball them names, and Sluggerrr was a popular addition to the morning festivities.

The following teams received trophies for their fundraising success. Hawthorn Bank placed first in the business division, Elks Lodge 1034 was first for organizations and schools, and Team Captain Sherry Collins contributed the most money for the Friends and Family category. Overall top fundraising team was Golden Valley Medical-Clinton.

According to Kathy Hill, Foundation Director, “The Diabetes Walk draws more participants every year. Our goal is to make this a fund community event while creating awareness about how personal health can be improved. It is also an important event in making life a bit easier for diabetes patients.” Jamie Ketterman, RN, BSN, Director of Diabetes Services, comments “The exciting part is to see so many people in so many age groups come together to help others and educate themselves about diabetes.”
