GVMH Advances Technology for Breast Care
All women are at risk for getting breast cancer. And, as we get older, our risk increases. On average, 1 in 8 women get breast cancer if they live to be 90 years old, and most women know at least one person who has the disease.
Golden Valley Memorial Hospital will soon have Stereotactic Breast Biopsy available full-time in Radiology Services to complement the new digital mammography technology. The stereotactic biopsy procedure is a minimally invasive and highly accurate. It helps physicians locate breast abnormalities and obtain tissue samples for diagnosis. The procedure has been used increasingly in the last several years and is rapidly replacing the open or surgical biopsy as the technique of choice.
The entire procedure can be performed in less than one hour. The patient receives a local anesthetic prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort. No sutures are needed, and the slight incision is covered with a small bandage.
The procedure has many benefits for the patients. It is easier, hurts less, leaves less scarring, and perhaps, more importantly, is a quicker way to get results than the old method. Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is the new standard in breast cancer detection.
