GVMH recently presented two “Excellence in Clinical Nursing Practice” awards. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding staff in the division of nursing: To honor a staff member providing direct care to patients, in any nursing setting, someone who is “Making A Difference “ every day and embodies the GVMH values of compassion, professionalism, excellence and accountability – someone committed to building a healthy America.

This award is presented annually during Nurses Week to two staff members. One award is given to a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. One award is presented to a non-licensed staff member in the nursing department. There are rigorous criteria one has to meet to be nominated for this award and an individual has to be nominated by more than one person.

The 2009 “Excellence in Clinical Nursing” award winners are Kim McDowell, RN, in the Home Services department and Judy Gann, Unit Secretary in 3 West Medical.

Kim’s skills and knowledge are respected by the physicians she works with, her peers and the patients and families she serves. The excellent care Kim provides her patients has helped them overcome huge challenges. She is knowledgeable about community resources, how to access them and utilize them to the best of her ability. Kim has demonstrated a willingness to learn and the ability to teach and mentor those she words with. Kim has recently accepted the assistant director of home services. Congratulations on your new position as well as this “Excellence in Clinical Nursing Award.”

Judy is a resource for the entire division of patient care services. There is not a place she cannot work, any department, any time. Judy is always looking out for the patient’s best interest, making sure nothing falls through the cracks. Judy is a member of many committees throughout the organization with a single purpose in mind… to help make us a better organization.  She is always polite and doesn’t get flustered when things get hectic around her. Judy has a calming presence about her that everyone benefits from.

These two award winners, Kim and Judy, truly reflect what our mission and vision states.
