Patient Safety Is A Priority at GVMH

Medication Safety is among the greatest concerns facing healthcare providers today.  Golden Valley Memorial Hospital has fully implemented the new McKesson AcuDose-Rx automated medication dispensing system to put nurses and pharmacists in complete control of all critical aspects when accessing patient medications.

The AcuDose-Rx is an automated, unit-based cabinet that dispenses, stores and tracks narcotics, floorstock and PRN (as needed) medications in patient care areas.  AcuDose-Rx allows the user to utilize touch screens to activate a variety of cabinet drawer and pocket types for the dispensing, returning and restocking of medication. JENNIFER BLANCHARD RECEIVES CWON CERTIFICATION

Jennifer Blanchard, RN, BSN, CWON

Jennifer Blanchard has successfully met the criteria and passed the examination to become certified in the areas of wound and ostomy nursing. Certification is a voluntary process designed to protect the consumer and ensure current knowledge in this nursing specialty. This respected certification is held only by an elite group of specialty nurses.   The CWON serves primarily as a consultant, educator, and/or administrator/manager in multiple healthcare settings, including inpatient, outpatient, long-term care, home health, and acute care. In addition, the CWON provides expert care in the management of patients with wound and ostomy issues.
Certified Wound Ostomy Nursing (CWON) is a distinct and well-defined field of nursing practice, which is national in scope and based on a tested body of specialty-related, data-based knowledge. Consistent with the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) definition of a nursing specialty, there is an identified need for the CWON specialty and for nurses who devote most of their practice to this area of nursing expertise. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredits the CWON certification programs. Accreditation by NCCA demonstrates the highest standards in certification, exceeding the requirements of the American Psychological Association and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Predetermined eligibility requirements must be met before a candidate is permitted to take the initial examination. Eligibility requirements include nurse licensure as a registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree. Additionally, the nurse must document one of the following:

  • Graduation from an accredited WOC educational program that requires 120 hours of classroom instruction and 120 clinical hours.
  • Completion of 1,500 hours of clinical practice and 50 continuing education units within the last five years for each specialty for which certification is being pursued. These clinical practice hours and continuing education units must be directly related to the specialty for which certification is sought.
  • Completion of a graduate-level program in nursing with documentation of clinical course work equivalent to two semester hours in WOC nursing content. Note: Clinical practice hours, continuing education credits, and clinical course work must be directly related to the specialty for which certification is being pursued.

Congratulations to Jennifer Blanchard, RN, BSN, CWON.  Jennifer is the Clinical Coordinator of GVMH’s Wound and Skin Care Clinic.  If you would like to know more about the Wound and Skin Care Clinic, please call 660-890-7245.

It’s Common.  It’s Treatable
  At GoldenMemorial Hospital.

More than 13 million women in the United States have urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control at some point in their lives. No one finds it easy to talk about, but it can be severe enough that it slows you down or limits your life.  You may restrict or avoid activities you love, like exercise, travel or even social relationships.

Stress urinary incontinence, or SUI, is the sudden, unintentional release of urine during normal, everyday activities.  You may have SUI if you lose urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, walk, exercise, lift something, or get up from a seated or lying position.  You may also go to the bathroom frequently during the day to avoid accidents.

You don’t have to suffer with SUI.  It is very treatable at any age.  Today you have choices – there are safe and effective minimally invasive procedures that can help you control this condition, stay active, and be confident.  These procedures are simpler, much less invasive than traditional surgical procedures that require large incisions and several days in the hospital.

Dr. Brandon Pomeroy, Urologist on staff at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital offers two minimally invasive surgical options for women with SUI:  Coaptite Injectable Implants and Gynecare TVT.  Both are outpatient procedures with minimal restrictions afterwards.  You should be back to your normal routine within a day or two.

Russell Stover Candies Makes
$100,000 GVMH Foundation Donation

Thomas S. Ward, President, Russell Stover Candies, presented a check for $100,000 this week to the GVMH Foundation as a kick-off donation for the LifeFlight Eagle Capital Campaign. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $750,000 to build a new hangar base on the GVMH campus for a LifeFlight Eagle Bell 407 helicopter. Completion date for the construction project is set for late Spring 2007.
The generous donation from the Louis L. and Adelaide C. Ward Foundation was given as a “kick-off” thank-you donation following an accident involving a Ward family member, who was treated by GVMH Ambulance personnel and flown to a Kansas City hospital by Lifeflight Eagle.

David Mills, GVMH Foundation Chairman, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Ward, the Ward Family Foundation, and Russell Stover Candies for the generous donation

“We are happy that GVMH Emergency Services and LifeFlight Eagle were able to respond so quickly and professionally to Mr. Ward’s family need,” Karen Bullock, GVMH Foundation Director, commented. “This investment in the future of our community by Russell Stover Candies is deeply appreciated.”

“The Russell Stover and Ward Foundation contribution really allows the campaign to start out on the right foot,” said LifeFlight Eagle CEO, Christine Zalar. “We are truly appreciative for this significant gesture of support and are so glad our service was able to provide part of the solution needed during an emergency.”
