OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY is the use of occupation (i.e. purposeful activity that is meaningful to the person and is aimed at achieving a goal) to support people in developing or regaining skills they need to learn, play, earn a living, and take care of themselves and others.

THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY STAFF provide assessment and treatment to persons whose daily function has been impaired by an injury or illness. Services are provided by licensed occupational therapists and licensed occupational therapy assistances to inpatients, outpatients and home health patients. All services require a written order from a physician.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY is provided in the following areas:

INPATIENT
Occupational therapy routinely provides evaluation and treatment to patients following illness, injury or surgery with a focus on functional activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, functional mobility, upper body strengthening, upper body function and coordination. Adaptive equipment can be provided to enable patients to increase their independence in performing daily tasks.

OUTPATIENT
Occupational therapy treats outpatients with orthopedic and neurological conditions such as upper extremity fractures, hand injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and CVA. Treatments include range of motion, strengthening, coordination, pain control, and functional activities.

INPATIENT REHABILITATION FACILITY
Occupational therapy is part of a comprehensive therapy approach of the use of purposeful, goal-directed activity aimed at improving a person’s functional skills and ability to function at the highest and safest level of independence possible.

HOME HEALTH
Occupational therapy treats patients through GVMH’s home health agency with a focus on functional activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, functional mobility, homemaking, upper body strengthening, upper body function and coordination.
