More than half of all cancer patients receive some form of radiation therapy as part of their treatment plan. When the Dr. James and JoAnn Bourland Radiation Oncology Center at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare is completed later this year, it will enable patients in our service area to receive a continuum of care equal to that of many big city facilities — only closer to home.
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of targeted radiation provided by a linear accelerator. The Bourland Radiation Oncology Center will feature one of the most advanced medical linear accelerators available today, the Varian Medical Systems TrueBeam.

When complete, the Bourland Radiation Oncology Center will be able to provide a variety of radiation therapies that precisely target cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Using image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), our experts will be able to treat cancers of the brain, spine, head, neck, lung, breast, esophagus, stomach, rectum, uterus, prostate, bladder, liver and skeleton.
Most treatment plans will begin with an in-depth discussion with your provider and a planning visit, called a simulation. During the simulation, we will perform a thorough CT scan of the tumor and create a treatment plan targeting precise locations of the cancer.
Once agreed to by you and your team, a personalized treatment plan is put into motion. The specific timing of each plan varies from patient to patient, but each is carried out precisely as ordered. All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and typically take half an hour or less.
