Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare (GVMH) has always been more than a hospital. It is the product of visionaries, community collaboration and families whose dedication to healing spans generations. Few stories illustrate this legacy more clearly than that of Dr. Gus Wetzel Sr. and Dr. R.S. Hollingsworth, two local physicians whose leadership and partnership helped shape healthcare in west-central Missouri.
Two Physicians, One Vision
In the 1970s, Dr. Wetzel Sr., owner of Wetzel Hospital, and Dr. Hollingsworth, owner of General Hospital, recognized the growing need for a unified, community-driven health care facility to better serve Clinton and the surrounding region. Rather than viewing one another as competitors, they saw the strength in working together.
Together, they spearheaded a petition to establish a public hospital, a bold step that ultimately led to the formation of Golden Valley Memorial Hospital. Their shared commitment to accessible, high-quality care became the foundation on which GVMH continues to thrive today.
A Family Tradition of Care
Dr. Gus Sr. was not only a founder, but also an accomplished surgeon whose passion for medicine inspired future generations. He had two sons who carried that commitment forward: Dr. Carroll Wetzel and Dr. Gus Wetzel II.
Dr. Carroll dedicated his career to surgery and to the patients and families of the region. Known for his skill, steady leadership and deep commitment to patient care, he helped strengthen surgical services at GVMH and cared for generations of families until his passing in 2005.
Dr. Gus II also followed in his father’s footsteps, building a career defined by service, innovation and mentorship. Over more than 50 years at GVMH, he cared for countless patients, advanced surgical capabilities and helped guide the organization’s growth. Though recently retired, his influence remains an enduring part of the organization.
Together, Dr. Carroll and Dr. Gus II brought laparoscopic surgery to GVMH in 1990, marking a major advancement in surgical care. At the same time, the next generation was preparing to carry that progress forward, as Dr. Carroll’s son, Dr. Rob Wetzel, was learning those same techniques during his surgical residency.
Today, that legacy continues through Dr. Rob who serves as a surgeon at GVMH. This multigenerational commitment reflects a shared dedication to excellence, compassion and continuous improvement —values that have become synonymous with the Wetzel name.
A New Chapter in Innovation
That legacy is now advancing through innovation. GVMH has implemented the da Vinci® 5 robotic surgical system, which is fully installed and actively being used to support minimally invasive procedures and expand surgical capabilities for patients in the region.
The milestone is especially meaningful for the Wetzel family. Though retired, Dr. Gus II returned to take part in installation and education sessions, witnessing firsthand how surgical technology has evolved since the early days of his career.
Dr. Rob is equally energized by the moment. As one of the surgeons now utilizing the da Vinci system in patient care, he sees the technology as both a professional advancement and a continuation of the family’s long-standing commitment to improving outcomes at GVMH.
Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future
The addition of robotic surgery represents more than a technology upgrade. It reflects the continued evolution of an organization rooted in collaboration, innovation and heart. For the Wetzel family, it is a powerful reminder of how far their shared vision has come and how strong the future remains for the communities they have served for generations.
From the early efforts of Dr. Wetzel Sr. and Dr. Hollingsworth to today’s use of advanced surgical technology, GVMH continues to embody the values that shaped its beginning: working together, caring deeply and always moving forward.
And as the Wetzel family helps lead this new era of care, the legacy they helped build remains strong and profoundly Golden.
