More than half of all cancer patients will undergo some form of radiation therapy as part of their treatment. Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare’s Bourland Radiation Oncology Center offers a level of care that rivals major city facilities — but it is right here, closer to home.
Radiation therapy uses high doses of targeted radiation to treat cancer, typically delivered by a linear accelerator. The Bourland Radiation Oncology Center is equipped with one of the most advanced linear accelerators available today: the Varian Medical Systems TrueBeam. The TrueBeam combines high precision, image-guided stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy to treat tumors virtually anywhere in the body.
Our Radiation Oncology Center offers a range of external beam radiation therapies, all designed to precisely target cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. Utilizing image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), our specialists are equipped to treat cancers of the brain, spine, head and neck, lung, breast, esophagus, stomach, rectum, uterus, prostate, bladder, liver and skeleton.
Your radiation treatment journey begins with an initial consultation, where you will discuss your treatment plan with your doctor. This is followed by a planning visit, known as a simulation. During the simulation, we will perform a detailed CT scan of the tumor and map out a personalized treatment strategy that targets the exact location of the cancer.
Once your treatment plan is finalized, it will be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. While the timing and frequency of radiation sessions may vary, most treatments are brief and performed on an outpatient basis — usually taking 30 minutes or less.
One of the greatest advantages of the Bourland Radiation Oncology Center is the convenience of receiving treatment close to home. For example, a typical breast cancer treatment plan requires daily visits for five or six weeks. By offering cutting-edge radiation technology locally, we reduce the stress, travel time and costs typically associated with long-distance treatment, making it easier for you to focus on healing.
This is why we proudly call it the Golden Standard of Cancer Care.
