Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare Encourages You to Know the Signs of Sepsis

Clinton, MO. – (Sept. 1, 2023) – In recognition of Sepsis Awareness Month, Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare (GVMH) is urging healthcare professionals, patients and their families to be aware of the signs and symptoms of sepsis and to act fast if sepsis is suspected.

"Sepsis occurs when the body has an extreme response to an infection, quickly becoming a life-threatening emergency,” said Nancy Engeman, RN, BSN, Quality Outcomes Coordinator. “It can happen to anyone, and early recognition and treatment are critical when it comes to preventing tissue damage, organ failure and death.”

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a patient with sepsis might have one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Clammy or sweaty skin
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Extreme pain or discomfort
  • Fever, shivering or feeling very cold
  • High heart rate or low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath

“If you or a loved one experience a combination of these symptoms, seek medical care immediately or call 911,” said Engeman. “At GVMH, we utilize staff training, care pathways and electronic surveillance to assure our patients receive early recognition and treatment.”
